Leasing a vehicle can be a very simple process if you know what you are looking for. Many people think that they should just go with the company that offers the best base rate, but this can very often wind up costing you more than a company that starts with a slightly higher rate that includes more. If you want to get the best deal than the following are the 5 main things to look for and ask about when you are renting a vehicle. These tips can really help you save money in the long run.

1. LOOK FOR THE NAME. Many people are misled by unknown companies who offer better rates than the larger company. While these companies may serve a purpose if you need to lease for a day while your regular vehicle is in the shop, for the most part it is not a wise idea to use these companies when you are traveling a long distance or renting in a vacation destination. While out and about, you want a company with a name like Budget or Avis that you know will stand behind you if you have any problems on the road. Emergency road services for a local company may not exist and can leave you paying out all your vacation funds in car repairs.

2. Ask For A Copy Of The Rental Agreement: We are all so busy that wee often do not look at our rental agreements until we go to pick up the vehicle. Even then, we still do not read the agreement carefully as we are in a rush to get our trip started. Since the rental agreement is the most important aspect of your rental, as the company to send you a copy of the rental agreement prior to picking up the car so that you can read through it at your own leisurely pace.

3. CHECK THEM OUT. Although they may be a company you have heard of occasionally some locations function better than others, so be sure to check out the location with the Better Business Bureau and online to see what people are saying. This is a good way to get a feel for what you can expect from them before you rent.

4. Always Take Unlimited Mileage: If you are renting your vehicle for a vacation then unlimited miles will be something that you want to ask about. This will make for a more relaxed vacation since you do not have to map out every place you go and how many miles you have used up. Although adding unlimited miles to your contract may cost you a few extra dollars, you will save much more in the long run.

5. ROAD SERVICE. This is a big item that can vary greatly from company to company, so know in advance how it will be handled if your vehicle breaks down while you are on the road. Finding out their policy in advance can save you a lot of trouble when you are on the road.

So many people go into a car dealership wearing a sign that only the sales people can see, it says “tell me what I want to hear!” For the most part, many people go into a dealership with the expectations that the sales person is going to be honest with them and be helpful in getting the best possible price for the vehicle that is desired by the consumer.

Well, it is very unlikely that a car sales person that is working off of a commission is going to help you get the best deal for your dollar. There are many different ways a sales person or dealership will utilize in order to trick you into a purchase.

One of the favored tricks of the trade are the “car leasing is better than buying.” In some cases this is in fact the truth, however, the salesperson cannot be the one to make that choice.
It should be left completely up to the consumer. A sales person will rely on the fact that the consumer is not knowledgeable about the facts when making the argument a convincing statement.

Commonly, a consumer will be told of the low interest rates, the minimal down payment, and the low-low monthly payments. This is done in the same manner as dangling a piece of candy in front of a child. To lure them in and make the sale. When leasing a vehicle there can be many hidden costs, for example high repairs and regular vehicle maintenance, costly over mileage charges and early lease termination to name but a few.

Another cheap trick that is ranked fairly high on the list is the premature car lease termination process. This is not at all stress free as the dealerships tend to let the consumers believe.

There are hidden costs involved with terminating the vehicle lease before it is scheduled to end. This process itself could actually wind up costing thousands of dollars as opposed to the $300 that many dealerships tend to say it will cost.

Once you have signed the car lease agreement it is very expensive to even attempt to get out of the contract. Be sure to read all of the fine print prior to signing anything.

Do not allow the sales person to tell you what it says, read it for yourself. This is another way that the dealership can get you. By reading everything, there should be no surprises in the long run.

Most car leases are designed to completed according to the end-date specified in the lease agreement. Attempting to end a lease early can often be troublesome and expensive.

Many leasing consumers mistakenly believe that, if they want to terminate early, they only have to return their vehicle to the lease finance company and walk away. Unfortunately, this would be a violation of their lease contract and result in collection proceedings against them for balances and fees owed. The consumer’s credit rating would also be damaged by what is considered a repossession.

Although most leases can be terminated early by contacting the lease company and arranging for either a buyout or early return, these options are usually very expensive due to the fact that the balance owed on the lease is typically much greater than the current market value of the vehicle — and much greater than is usually expected.

There is an option, however, that is frequently overlooked. Many lease companies, but not all, allow leases to be transfered to another party who is interested in taking the vehicle and assuming responsibility for the remainder of the lease. This option can only be exercised with the permission and participation of the lease company. To do otherwise is a contract violation.

The advantage of this option to the consumer who wants out of his lease is that it is much less expensive than the above mentioned early buyout or return. The process is easy and there is no impact on credit history.

There may be disadvantages however. First, as we mentioned earier, many lease companies simply don’t allow transfers, which removes this as an option. Second, of those companies who do allow transfers, a large number of them insist on keeping the original lessee responsible for the lease if the new lessee defaults. This is not ideal and presents a risk that many people find objectionable.

Of course, even if the lease company allows transfers and releases the original lessee from future responsibility, there’s the problem of finding someone who is interested in taking over the lease.

There are two ways in which this can be done.

First, you can do it yourself. Find family, friends, or advertise in your local newspaper. When an interested party is found, you’ll contact your lease company for further instructions. Find out first if your lease company allows transfers.

Second, you can use the services of one of the relatively new online lease “swap” or “trade” companies who, for a fee, list your vehicle and help you find “buyers.” They also handle most of the paperwork with the lease company when a transfer is done.

If a lease transfer doesn’t work out in a specific situation, other, more costly options will have to be considered. Unless an early termination is absolutely necessary, the least costly solution may be to simply continue the lease until its normal end.
